I don't understand the crochet lingo used in crochetting slippers..?

The way I see it you make a chain of 3 stitches then you make 9 half double crochet all in the first stitch. When you've done the 9 join with a slip stitch to the top of the First HDC. You would have made a circle. Try it. I did.
