How does Potty Elmo work when he sits on the potty?

A friend gave me the Elmo doll but no potty and all he does is say he's thirsty, drinks, and then says he had an accident because he didn't make it to the potty. I've pushed all over his but and I CAN NOT figure it out!!!!!
